2021 is a year in which many Latin American countries commemorate their political independence from Spain. It is an occasion to reflect on political independence together with freedom. Now, in the case of freedom, we have to distinguish between different types, although for many there is only plain freedom (Friedrich A. Hayek). In reality, it is possible to speak of political freedom, physical freedom, interior freedom, economic freedom, etc.; Hayek's point is that when freedom is lost in one area, the damage spills over to other freedoms. As for independence, the question that arises is more about degrees of independence, because total independence in the sense of autarchy that leads to isolation is neither possible nor desirable. The question, rather, is what forms of independence make us grow as a political community? This is one of the questions that can be addressed in the discussion of this issue of the magazine.
