Abstract

One of the issues that generates the most controversy today is democracy, where it is not easy to start a discussion without a series of prejudices or assumptions interfering that hinder a good understanding of it. To offer some elements for reflection, in this essay we will try to examine the distance that separates modern democracy from classical democracy, in order to shed light on the lesson of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who should be considered as the father of modern democracy and socialism. To finally try to underline how today the demand for democracy, participation and representation can also lead to expanding the spaces of freedom, it being paradoxical to show how democracy manifests its own contradictions paving the way for unpredictable results.
