Abstract

Deneen draws in accurate strokes the foundations of the vision of man and society typical of liberal philosophy, its individualism and its statism. The problems of liberal democracy are addressed, but also the crisis in the humanities, the challenges of an unfair economy, etc., and some guidelines for achieving genuine liberalism. Deneen draws in accurate strokes the foundations of the vision of man and society typical of liberal philosophy, its individualism and its statism. The problems of liberal democracy are addressed, but also the crisis in the humanities, the current technocratic paradigm and its impact on ecology, the challenges of an unfair economy, etc., and some guidelines for achieving genuine liberalism. Patrick Deneen is Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, USA), where he decided to join after passing through Georgetown and Princeton. Irish by origin, he is a recognized expert on the work of Alexis de Tocqueville and a convinced defender of the importance of the liberal arts in education.
