Abstract

My article aims to illustrate the problem of political consciousness in the thought of Bertrand de Jouvenel, one of the most important French liberal thinkers of the 20th century. I intend to highlight one of the least known aspects of this author's thought, which places it in the context of Christian political philosophy. This aspect refers to the problem of the relationship between individual freedom and collective consciousness. Man's life, being in continuous contact with his equals, prevents the presence of a completely autonomous existential dimension, in which he can fully act, apart from the duties imposed by the community to which he belongs. In this paper I will try to highlight Jouvenel's reflection on the relationship between individual moral conscience and political conscience, focusing on the special bond established between the community and the individual.
