Abstract

How democracy is disrupted by populism and what ways are there to save it. A book that has topped the list of best sellers in the United States. The appearance of different examples of populism in different parts of the world has brought to light a question that no one asked a few years ago: are our democracies in danger? Harvard University professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt have spent two decades studying the fall of various democracies in Europe and Latin America, and they believe the answer to that question is yes. From the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile to Erdogan's discreet and gradual erosion of the Turkish constitutional system, Levitsky and Ziblatt show how various democracies have disappeared and what we can do to save ours. Because democracy no longer ends with a bang (a military coup or a revolution), but with a slight whimper: the slow and progressive weakening of essential institutions, such as the legal system or the press, and the global erosion of political norms. traditional. The good news is that there are exit options on the road to authoritarianism and populism of various kinds.
