Abstract

"Liberalism" and "democracy" are important concepts for understanding contemporary political philosophy. However, in common parlance these are often confused and considered synonyms. If we look at them historically, we can see how they have long been conceived as antithetical to each other. Many liberals, at least since Tocqueville, saw democracy as a political system that could harm individual liberty and the rights of minorities.
