Abstract

One of the oldest and most recurrent themes in human history is the tension between strong individuals and the communities to which they belong. This tension is heightened when it comes to the relationship between religious authority and political authority. The social condemnation of the individual who escapes the prevailing norms is a theme inspiring a wide range of literary and philosophical works, from Socrates' Apology to the Bible, from Stuart Mill's Essay on Liberty to Foucault's The Abnormal. The significance of these themes lies in their ability to inspire reflections on the future of Western civilization.
