Abstract

There is an opposition between the world of the scholastics, focused on theological and metaphysical questions, and the modern world, more interested in the advancement of natural science and material well-being. This opposition feeds on the positivism of Comte. The fact that modernity deals more with science is not an option or choice, it is inevitable, for all that remains is the pure immanence of knowledge. Comte draws its ultimate consequences from the Kantian theory of knowledge, and one area where this is most clearly appreciated is in the foundation of morality.
