Abstract

John Henry Newman (1801-1890) is arguably the best-known converted intellectual in Victorian England. His life was long and rich, and his writings abundant, so that it is easy to put his name in relation to diverse subjects, such as the university and liberal education, or also to terms such as: Church, conversion, truth, faith, reason. , freedom, fidelity and conscience. But if we had to choose just one of those words, we would choose conscience. And this, not only because of his understanding of the subject on a theoretical level, but because his entire life can be summed up as a sincere search for the truth, following the voice of conscience. In the Letter to the Duke of Norfolk, Newman contributed to clarifying the relationship between the authority of the pope and that of conscience, given the doubts that arose in England after the definition of papal infallibility in Vatican Council I. Beyond this circumstance, the text has already become a classic on the subject of moral conscience.
