Abstract

This article identifies the ideological, cultural and historical roots of the Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) movement. It identifies the relationship of ESG with concepts such as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the stakeholder governance theory. It posits that an international industry has emerged as a result of the ESG concept, and that it reaps economic and political benefits from imposing on firms a series of obligations related to environmental protection, new social rights and new forms of governance.
